Supporting Your Body Through Pregnancy, the Fourth Trimester & Your Baby's First Summer

There is something special about summer.

The days are longer, the gardens are in full bloom, children are laughing outside, and nature gently reminds us to slow down. It's a season that invites us to be present.

And perhaps that invitation is even more important during pregnancy and those precious first months with your baby.

As an osteopathic manual practitioner, and as a mom, I often remind my patients that our bodies are incredibly intelligent. They are constantly adapting, protecting, and doing their very best with the information they have.

Pregnancy is one of the most remarkable examples of that.

Your Body Is Doing Something Extraordinary

Over the course of nine months, nearly every system in your body changes.

Your heart pumps up to 50% more blood. Your lungs learn to share space with your growing baby. Your rib cage expands, your diaphragm changes the way it moves, your pelvis gradually softens in preparation for birth, and your nervous system continuously adapts to support both you and your little one.

When summer arrives, your body has one more job to do regulate its temperature.

That extra warmth can leave you feeling more swollen, more tired, or simply like you don't have the same energy you normally do.

That doesn't mean your body is struggling.

It means it's working.

Listen Before You Push

We live in a world that celebrates productivity, but nature teaches us something different.

On the hottest days, even nature slows down.

Trees conserve water. Animals seek shade. Flowers close their petals. Rest is not weakness it is part of survival.

Your body deserves that same compassion.

Drink water before you feel thirsty. Add electrolytes if needed. Eat colourful foods that naturally hydrate you like watermelon, berries, cucumber, peaches, and fresh vegetables. Wear breathable clothing. Put your feet up. Go for a walk early in the morning when the world is still quiet.

And if your body asks for a nap...

Listen.

Your body is not asking you to do less because you're failing.

It's asking because it's building a human.

Why Osteopathy Can Help During Pregnancy

One of my favourite things about osteopathy is that it asks a different question.

Instead of asking, "Where does it hurt?" we ask, "Why is your body having to work so hard?"

As your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts. Your pelvis rotates. Your diaphragm has less room to move. Your rib cage opens to make space. Muscles begin working overtime to stabilize you, while hormones soften your ligaments in preparation for birth.

Sometimes those beautiful adaptations create more strain than your body can comfortably manage.

That's where osteopathic care can help.

Using gentle manual treatment, we help restore movement where the body has become restricted. Whether it's improving the mobility of the pelvis, freeing the diaphragm to breathe more comfortably, helping the rib cage move with greater ease, or reducing tension through the spine, our goal is always the same to support your body's incredible ability to adapt.

Because when the body moves well, it often functions better too.

Your Baby's First Summer

Babies are wonderfully resilient, but they're also still learning.

Their nervous system is developing. Their digestion is maturing. Their temperature regulation isn't yet as efficient as ours.

They depend on us to help them find balance.

Keep them out of direct midday sun. Dress them in light, breathable clothing. Offer feeds more frequently if they're showing signs of thirst. Find shady places to enjoy the outdoors together.

And don't underestimate the healing power of simply slowing down together.

A quiet contact nap.

A gentle walk beneath the trees.

Skin-to-skin after a bath.

These aren't just beautiful moments they help regulate your baby's nervous system, breathing, heart rate, and even digestion.

Sometimes the simplest things are doing far more than we realize.

Osteopathy for Babies

Birth is an incredible transition.

Whether your labour was quick or long, vaginal or by cesarean birth, every baby experiences significant forces as they enter the world.

Most adapt beautifully.

Some need a little extra support.

If your baby prefers looking to one side, struggles with latching, seems uncomfortable during feeds, develops a flat spot on their head, or has difficulty settling, those may simply be signs that their body could benefit from a little more freedom of movement.

Osteopathic treatment for babies is incredibly gentle.

We aren't forcing change, we're listening to the body and helping it find balance.

Babies often show us just how intelligent the body really is.

The First 40 Days: Healing Is Part of Birth Too

One tradition I wish our modern culture embraced more is the idea of the first 40 days after birth.

Across many cultures, this time is considered sacred.

Not because mothers are fragile, but because they have just accomplished something extraordinary.

After birth, your body continues working around the clock. Your uterus is healing. Your abdominal wall and pelvic floor are recovering. Hormones are shifting dramatically. Your blood volume is regulating. Your nervous system is adapting to broken sleep, breastfeeding, and caring for a brand-new human.

Healing is still happening, even if no one can see it.

As mothers, we often feel pressure to bounce back.

To clean the house.

To entertain visitors.

To get back into exercise.

To "feel like ourselves" again.

But what if we allowed ourselves to become someone new instead?

Someone who rests without guilt.

Someone who accepts help.

Someone who lets family and community hold her while she holds her baby.

From an osteopathic perspective, those first weeks matter. As the pelvis, rib cage, diaphragm, spine, and connective tissues gradually reorganize after pregnancy and birth, giving the body time and support can influence how it heals for months and even years to come.

There is strength in slowing down.

Healing Happens When We Feel Safe

At Osteo Naturel & Wellness, we believe the body heals best when it feels safe.

Safety isn't only found in a treatment room.

It's found in laughter around the dinner table.

It's found in watching the sunset from your porch.

It's found in taking your shoes off and feeling the grass beneath your feet.

It's found in asking for help.

It's found in taking one deep breath before picking up your baby.

These small moments help calm the nervous system, allowing the body to shift away from survival and toward healing.

So this summer, I hope you give yourself permission to slow down.

Trust your body.

Trust your baby.

Nature has a beautiful way of reminding us that growth doesn't happen in a rush, it happens through seasons.

Wishing you and your family a summer filled with sunshine, connection, and moments that nourish not only your body, but your mind and spirit as well.
